The Economist Intelligence Unit believes that its indices reflect the most sensible approach to cost of living calculation that can be taken: The Worldwide Cost of Living Survey is not oriented toward any one nationality, but based upon a single set of international weights. The Worldwide Cost of Living survey allows you to compare the cost of living in over 130 cities around the world. The ranking draws upon a comprehensive underlying data set including over 400 individual price points across 160 goods and services in 90 countries. The Worldwide Cost of Living is a twice yearly Economist Intelligence Unit survey that compares more than 400 individual prices across 160 products and services. These include food, drink, clothing, household supplies and personal care items, home rents, transport, utility bills, private schools, domestic help and recreational costs. The Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER) produces several proprietary products and provides a variety of services to members and non-members. Cost of Living Index The quarterly Cost of Living Index provides a useful and reasonably accurate way to compare cost of living differences between urban areas weighted by different categories of consumer expenditures for mid-management households. Cost of living, monetary cost of maintaining a particular standard of living, usually measured by calculating the average cost of a number of specific goods and services required by a particular group.The goods and services used as indexes may be the minimum necessary to preserve health or may be what is considered average for a given income group, depending on the purposes of the index. Taking an average of the indices for all cities surveyed using New York as the base city, the global cost of living has fallen to 69%, down from 73% last year. This remains significantly lower than five years ago, when the average cost of living index across the cities surveyed was 82% and ten years ago was 89%.
